First Cherry Blossom

Northeastern Tea Expo 2026

During the third and final year I was a member of the Traditional Tea clubs, I was elected president of the Japanese Tea club, Chanoyu. Coincidentally, it was also the year that the Japanese Tea club would be holding our own expo, after the success of the grand expo in 2024 and the Chinese tea expo in 2025. Therefore, I was to be in charge of the planning, execution, and design, taking over complete control of the project after two years.

The theme we decided upon was “First Cherry Blossom”, as the date of the expo perfectly fell inside the corresponding microseason, an important part of Japanese Tea Ceremony and culture. Unlike last year’s more vague, feeling based branding, this year we created a much more literal brand, focusing on the traditional Japanese beauty and  sincerity found in the branches of the cherry blossoms.

Alongside the expo planning and branding work, I also created a short film to be shown during the opening ceremony. Matching the expo’s branding, the frame by frame animation uses sumi-e brushing and soft watercolor paint above a background reminiscent of an aging scroll, all chosen to highlight the aesthetics of Japanese Tea, and to honor the club and culture that I held dear in my time as an undergraduate.
