Herzschmerz Märchen is an emotional and artistic retelling of the classic fairytale  “Sneewittchen”, (colloquially known as Snow White,) as a three-spread fashion publication. Combining both photography and layout design, this project required complete control over every aspect of the magazine. I was required to select my own models, plan and execute their hair, makeup, and outfits, take every picture, create every set, and design the magazine's layout by hand. But first was choosing a story to depict, and I decided on Snow White. Specifically, a recreation of Snow White the fairytale, written in 1812 by the Brother’s Grimm, rather than the more commonly known Disney retelling.

In all possible ways, Snow White is a story about love. While most retellings seem to focus on the love between Snow White and the prince, I wanted to instead focus on the love between Snow White and her stepmother. I wanted to imagine a world where they were once a happy family. Where they were once happy, together. A world where the young stepmother’s bright, innocent love gets twisted and poisoned by her envy. A world where Snow White is but a child, a victim to the persisting love and trust she has for her one and only mother. Highlighted by a  transition from light to shadow, changing shawls and unique framing techniques reminiscent of a mirror, the magazine is filled from start to finish with hidden meaning and storytelling , the magazine travels through time as the stepmother loses herself to her emotions, losing everything she never knew she had in the process.
